Winged

Twice a year, the world is in perfect balance as Nyx and Helios share equal times in the skies. Helios’ dominance has come to an end as the Autumnal Equinox has passed and the shift into the month of shadows has begun. It is now Nyx’s time to hold sway

The shift into darkness is normal this time of year. The mortals have begun their harvest celebrations, thanking me for giving them enough to survive through my annual depression. Normally, I would join in their celebrations, but not this year. As OA counsel, my place is here. But there’s more to it than that. There is something going on, I just haven’t figured it out yet. The Universe is telling me that the shift is happening at an alarming rate.

As I enter the library of the immortals, I feel the Universe guiding me. I light some candles to help me focus on my quest. I have no idea what I’m looking for, but something tells me I’ll know it when I see it. I scour books and magazine articles, I read blog posts and listen to podcasts. I soon notice something they each have in common; stories of mysterious winged beasts.

In my research, I began to find that there are stories from all around the world of winged creatures that roam the night. The United States holds stories of creatures known as The Mothman and The Jersey Devil. In Japan, there is a story of a large, winged creature seen around the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant.

I’m no stranger to odd, winged beasts. I lived around harpies and sirens for centuries. But this is something different, something stronger. I’m beginning to get worried. Though some stories have been passed down through time, it’s the modern accounts that have me concerned. They seem to be on the rise and many sightings are coming in the wake of major catastrophes.

I have found that the sightings of the Mothman were at their height between 1966 and 1967, just before the collapse of a large suspension-bridge in Point Pleasant, West Virginia. The bridge collapsed during rush-hour traffic and killed nearly 50 people. A single eyebar in one of the suspension chains had caused the problem. But what caused the eyebar to break?

The beast seen in Japan was also said to make itself known before a major catastrophe. Reports of a winged humanoid became official around 1952 but became more prevalent shortly after the turn of the 21st century. In February of 2011, it was reported that several eye-witnesses had seen a large, winged creature flying around the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant. Only a month later, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake hit the region, causing the power plant to be shut down due to radiation contamination.

As I continue on with my research, I have a strange sensation run down my back. It’s not one of my brethren trying to sneak in on me, but a strange vibration in the air. It feels like tiny pins of electricity are working their way around my spine. The hairs on the back of my neck rise and my skin prickles.

I look around the room and realize that it has gotten dark. The flickering of the candles causes ominous shadows on the walls. I think I see waves of static trail through the room and I feel a draft resonate from beneath my office door.

Suddenly, WHOOSH!!! A bright light illuminates the room beyond. I hear a scream that sounds as though it’s coming from the bowels of Gaia, followed by a heavy thud on the floor.

Then, the light is gone and only darkness remains. The electricity subsides and an eerie silence befalls the library. Slowly, I walk to the door and reach for the knob. I open it to find a dark reception area. I turn on the lights and look to the middle of the room. There, on the floor, is something I’d not believe to be true had I not been looking directly at it.

I slam the door shut and run back to my desk. I grab my phone and call the only other god I think might know what to do.“Hades, it’s Demeter. I need you up here, now. There’s something in my office. It’s stone or…I don’t know. I think it was twitching, but that can’t be. It’s carved or…shaped. I know it sounds crazy but I think it’s…it’s…it’s a wing.”
