= Personal Information =

General Overview: Though most mortals fear him, they will find Thanatos is a very kind and gentle god. He can’t understand what all the hubbub is over dying anyway. It is, after all, only natural and inevitable, but, oh well. He is always smiling and laughing at something.  He always has a story to tell, but be mindful: his stories tend to go in various directions until it gets back to the main subject of the story. In his stories, he has a nickname for every god.

He is very trusting of the mortals that when it’s their time, it’s their time and they will come quietly but he knows this is not always the case.  But he remains hopeful that one day the mortals will come to understand and not be afraid.

While the mortals fear him, the other gods see him as an oddity. His hopeful and trusting nature make his seem naïve to the other gods. His overenthusiasm for his job, stories, and his enormous sweet tooth (hence the candy stores) make him seem almost childlike to the other gods. When he gets really excited, he talks super-fast.

He is, however, the lonely god. Unlike the outcast gods, he has no partner, but unrequited love for the Goddess Artemis  (Don’t tell her that).

Though he is insanely loyal to Mr. Hades, unlike the others of the Underworld who just agree with him, Thanatos is always asking if that is such a good idea.  He sees Hades as a surrogate father, unlike his own father (not going there), and doesn’t reside in the Oneiroi like his family, for his own reasons.

Nicknames: Than, God of Peaceful Death, Lieutenant of Hades, Reaper of Souls

Likes: Black Peppermint, sugars, sweets, children, Night time, the Moon, Collecting souls, telling stories of the gods to the dead, Mr. Hades, Artemis, Nyx (go mom), chess

Dislikes: Hercules, Sisyphus, Hypnos, Charon, Erebus, Atropos (only because she’s scary)

= Flaws / Weaknesses =

Too trusting, tends to ramble, loses focus, and can’t keep secrets (overshares)

= Skills / Abilities =

Immortality – Thanatos is technically immortal. He is immune to the effects of aging, cannot die by any conventional means, and is immune to all known mortal diseases and infections.

Babble-speak – Thanatos can communicate in all languages and dialects.

Death God – As a Death God, Thanatos claims the souls of any worshipper of the Greek Gods and takes them to his Underworld for Mr. Hades. Unlike Hades, Thanatos can wipe a soul out of existence, but only those who are bound for Asphodel or Tartarus.  He doesn’t do it often (Mr. Hades likes his servants), and it is often done at the behest of Mr. Hades, Sky Daddy Zeus, and once in a great while, the Sky Mother, Hera.

Limited Shapeshifting- Thanatos can appear to the souls bound for Elysium in the form of a loved one who has passed (mother, father, sister, brother, child). To the ones bound for Asphodel, sometimes he can appear as a swirling gray mist, but mostly just his hooded self. For the ones bound for Tartarus, he can appear as a winged shadow with blazing red eye or in the skeleton form of the traditional grim reaper.   After the Mortals pass through the gate, they forget what form he came in.

Cloning- To achieve maximum effort in soul gathering (even though Mr. Hades comes and take souls personally), Thanatos is able to remove feathers from his wings. These feathers become carbon copies of him. Then Thanatos assigns each copy an area and number of souls to claim.

Telekinesis – Thanatos can move small to medium objects and people in visible range without physically touching them.

Dreamscaping– Similar to his brother Hypos and nephew Morpheus, Thanatos can enter the dreams of mortals. He uses this ability to scare straight mortals who are veering from their true path into the path of darkness.

= Personal Attire =

Normal Daily Wear: A long black cloak and hood, black combat boots

Alternative Dress Wear: Tailored black suits, black trench coat, black fedora, black shore boots (all from Mr. Hades he says my cloak is passé, whatever that means)

= Magical Artifacts/Weapons =

Scythe of the Cosmos – The Scythe allows Thanatos to rip holes open in the fabric of existence, creating gateway portals to the Underworld, Olympus, the Mortal realm, and sometimes places beyond.  He also uses this to gather the souls of battlefields to him in one swiping motion over the field.

Soul Pouch – A pouch he carries on the belt of his robe that holds an infinite number of souls while he goes about his tasks of collecting for the night. The souls inside seem to step into a place void unit, and he deposits them at the appropriate gate of the Underworld.

Cloak of Nyx – His trademark cloak and hood he wears was woven by his mother Nyx to keep him invisible to the mortal’s eyes. The only mortals to see him are the ones near death, dead already, survived a near death experience (only briefly), and once blessed with sight from the god Apollo. The cloak also shields him from the eyes of his fellow gods (except Mr. Hades), but they can sense him.

Introduction written by Marc Tizura

Hi there! So glad you came to see me! Come in, come in. Sit down there. How do you take your coffee? It’s Mr. Hades’ blend, Dark Sparks. Me, I take it with heavy sweet creams and ten scoops of sugar, and ohhhh, ohh, ohh, it’s so good.

This is my cottage; do you like it? I designed it myself, no one helped me. The items on the walls you see there are washed up from the Styx at high tide. This one right here is one of my favorites. It’s a pocket watch, and if you open the face here you can read what’s inscribed: “To John all my love Emma”! That’s a joke and a lie. Did you know the Styx washes up items of broken hopes, dreams and promises!

What’s that? Why was it a lie? Oh, right, right, sorry, because Emma was caught cheating and John shot them both and then himself. Sad story, huh?

You haven’t touched you coffee yet, and I’m about to fill my second cup. Come on now, drink up! Charon will be here any moment to pick you up. What’s that?  You can’t pay for passage? Well, how fortuitous then. Yes, sir, how fortuitous. You can work in one of my sweet shops down here until you make enough for passage.  That what all you wandering souls along the shores of the Aveinos do these days; they work for me. Isn’t that cool? Drink up, and then go see Leopold behind the counter at the shop. He’ll set you up.
