Professions

When I am not taking souls to the Underworld for Mr. Hades, I am the owner of Mr. T’s Sweet and Sundae shops. We provide sweets treats to mortals, gods, and the dead alike. Our candies and ice creams are inspired by the Pantheon. I suggest you try some of our more popular flavors, such as Dark Spark Coffee ice cream (inspired by Mr. Hades), Sky daddy lightning salt water taffy (Zeus inspired) maybe Moonbeam cotton candy (Artemis’ favorite), or my personal favorite, Black peppermint. You can find our stores at these locations:

Chicago New York Los Angeles London Paris The Underworld (various locations) Mount Olympus Pompeii Closed (I am so sorry about that) Atlantis Grand Reopening

Residence

A small black cottage on the shores of Lake Aveinos (it’s bigger on the inside).

Personal Information

General Overview: Though most mortals fear him, they will find Thanatos is a very kind and gentle god. He can’t understand what all the hubbub is over dying anyway. It is, after all, only natural and inevitable, but, oh well. He is always smiling and laughing at something. He always has a story to tell, but be mindful: his stories tend to go in various directions until it gets back to the main subject of the story. In his stories, he has a nickname for every god.

He is very trusting of the mortals that when it’s their time, it’s their time and they will come quietly but he knows this is not always the case. But he remains hopeful that one day the mortals will come to understand and not be afraid.

While the mortals fear him, the other gods see him as an oddity. His hopeful and trusting nature make his seem naïve to the other gods. His overenthusiasm for his job, stories, and his enormous sweet tooth (hence the candy stores) make him seem almost childlike to the other gods. When he gets really excited, he talks super-fast.

He is, however, the lonely god. Unlike the outcast gods, he has no partner, but unrequited love for the Goddess Artemis (Don’t tell her that).

Though he is insanely loyal to Mr. Hades, unlike the others of the Underworld who just agree with him, Thanatos is always asking if that is such a good idea. He sees Hades as a surrogate father, unlike his own father (not going there), and doesn’t reside in the Oneiroi like his family, for his own reasons.

Nicknames: Than, God of Peaceful Death, Lieutenant of Hades, Reaper of Souls

Likes: Black Peppermint, sugars, sweets, children, Night time, the Moon, Collecting souls, telling stories of the gods to the dead, Mr. Hades, Artemis, Nyx (go mom), chess

Dislikes: Hercules, Sisyphus, Hypnos, Charon, Erebus, Atropos (only because she’s scary)

Flaws / Weaknesses

Love Me Not. Due to the limits set forth by his powers, Thanatos is terribly unlucky at love. Like most immortal beings, he desires the intimacy – forever is a death sentence when spent alone – but relationships are fraught with difficulties.

Unfocused. Thanatos has a tendency to lose focus, causing a lack of attention and sometimes general rambling that makes him a challenge to understand.

Death Touch. Thanatos cannot touch any living thing without killing it. This tragic flaw keeps Thanatos ever at arms’ length with the mortal world and all its frail beauty. It can age and decay inorganic matter as well, as nothing escapes the ravages of death. While this power does not affect immortals the same way, Thanatos’ touch is as chill as the grave, and as close to oblivion as any of the gods ever want to get.

Shadow of Death. Thanatos’ aura has to be controlled at all times lest it destroy everything in its path, which it has sometimes done to disastrous effects.

Skills / Abilities

Immortality. Technically immortal. Immune to the effects of aging, cannot die by any conventional means, and is immune to all known mortal diseases and infections. As a deity, they are able to teleport, or "pop" anywhere in the mortal plane with a few exceptions, the God Floors of the GC HQ are mystically protected, so no teleporting to or in between them, anything on the non-mortal plane, i.e., the Underworld, Atlantis, and the Void, are non-accessible without a guide.

Babble-speak. Thanatos can communicate in all languages and dialects.

Death God. As a Death God, Thanatos is called to the surface to collect the souls of the Dead. Some arrangement has been made above his pay grade for who gets slated for collection, which Thanatos does not question. When summoned by a mortal demise, Thanatos claims the soul and takes them to his Underworld for Mr. Hades. Unlike Mr. Hades, Thanatos can wipe a soul out of existence, but only those who are bound for Asphodel or Tartarus. He doesn’t do it often, and only at the express command of Mr. Hades. If any other deity wishes to have a soul obliterated, that request must come through Mr. Hades to Thanatos.

Limited Shapeshifting.Thanatos can appear to the souls bound for Elysium in the form of a loved one who has passed (mother, father, sister, brother, child). To the ones bound for Asphodel, sometimes he can appear as a swirling gray mist, but mostly just his hooded self. For the ones bound for Tartarus, he can appear as a winged shadow with blazing red eyes, or in the skeleton form of the traditional Grim Reaper. After the Mortals pass through the gate, they forget how Thanatos appeared to them.

Cloning. To achieve maximum effort in soul gathering (even though Mr. Hades occasionally comes to take souls personally), Thanatos is able to remove feathers from his wings. These feathers become carbon copies of him. Thanatos assigns each replica a geographic area and number of souls to claim. During times of war, Thanatos’ wings are bedraggled from the necessity of so many clones to handle the massive influx of dead. The feathers eventually grow back as the work to gather the fallen is completed.

Telekinesis. Because of his inability to touch things without causing death, Mr. Hades taught Thanatos how to move things without touching them. Thanatos can move small to medium objects and people in visible range. The power requires immense energy and can leave Thanatos depleted to an extent equal and opposite with the amount of force required for the telekinetic act.

Umbrakinesis. Similar to his sister, Nemesis, Thanatos has the ability to manipulate shadows. Using this power, Thanatos can step between shadows like doorways, appearing wherever a shadow falls, no matter how small. Thanatos can leverage shadow in a number of ways, from commanding shadows to gather for purposes of obfuscation to utilizing the shadows for healing purposes.

Personal Attire

Normal Daily Wear: A long black cloak and hood, black combat boots

Alternative Dress Wear: Tailored black suits, black trench coat, black fedora, black shore boots (all from Mr. Hades he says my cloak is passé, whatever that means)

Magical Artifacts/Weapons

Scythe of the Cosmos – The Scythe allows Thanatos to rip holes open in the fabric of existence, creating gateway portals to the Underworld, Olympus, the Mortal realm, and sometimes places beyond. He also uses this to gather the souls of battlefields to him in one swiping motion over the field.

Soul Pouch – A pouch he carries on the belt of his robe that holds an infinite number of souls while he goes about his tasks of collecting for the night. The souls inside seem to step into a place void unit, and he deposits them at the appropriate gate of the Underworld.

Cloak of Nyx – His trademark cloak and hood he wears was woven by his mother Nyx to keep him invisible to the mortal’s eyes. The only mortals to see him are the ones near death, dead already, survived a near-death experience (only briefly), and once blessed with sight from the god Apollo. The cloak also shields him from the eyes of his fellow gods (except Mr. Hades), but they can sense him.

Introduction written by Marc Tizura

Hi there! So glad you came to see me! Come in, come in. Sit down there. How do you take your coffee? It’s Mr. Hades’ blend, Dark Sparks. Me, I take it with heavy sweet creams and ten scoops of sugar, and ohhhh, ohh, ohh, it’s so good.

This is my cottage; do you like it? I designed it myself, no one helped me. The items on the walls you see there are washed up from the Styx at high tide. This one right here is one of my favorites. It’s a pocket watch, and if you open the face here you can read what’s inscribed: “To John all my love Emma”! That’s a joke and a lie. Did you know the Styx washes up items of broken hopes, dreams and promises!

What’s that? Why was it a lie? Oh, right, right, sorry, because Emma was caught cheating and John shot them both and then himself. Sad story, huh?

You haven’t touched your coffee yet, and I’m about to fill my second cup. Come on now, drink up! Charon will be here any moment to pick you up. What’s that? You can’t pay for passage? Well, how fortuitous then. Yes, sir, how fortuitous. You can work in one of my sweet shops down here until you make enough for passage. That what all you wandering souls along the shores of the Aveinos do these days; they work for me. Isn’t that cool? Drink up, and then go see Leopold behind the counter at the shop. He’ll set you up.
