Know Your Goddess

Height: 5’11”

Weight: 155 lbs.

Hair Color: Jet Black

Facial Hair: None

Eyes: Sky Blue (eyes change to black when she’s furious or performing magic on earth)

Distinguishing Features: A few thin black tattoos scattered about on various points of her body.

Spouse: Hekate struggles to find her perfect mate. She secretly wants someone who can handle her power and her darkness, but she is so fiercely independent that it’s a struggle for anyone who comes near her.

Children: No human children, but has a pack of black hounds who she considers her babies; four on earth (Cassius, Hex, Dante, Dorian) and four in the Underworld (Draco, Malachi, Crowley, Lucifer).

Professions

Hekate spends six months on earth as a psychopomp for ghosts trapped on earth, who won’t be able to cross the River Styx once they enter the Underworld. Once they descend, they live in her realm as shades. She also is the goddess of witchcraft, so she acts as protector of young women and witches, while also providing spells & magic to whoever needs her help. For the other six months of the year, she acts as a companion for Persephone in the Underworld.

Residence

Hekate detests the city, and while she has a floor of the God Complex HQ (the 13th floor), she built her own house on a hill as close to the Olympus National Park as possible, where she can grow her baneful herbs and where her hounds can roam free. She also lives in Propalyia, her kingdom in the Underworld, which is a version of her earth home, except it is filled with shades, skeletal looking animals, and dead plants (an inversion of her earthly home).

Personal Information

General Overview: Hekate is the goddess of witchcraft and ghosts, bouncing between living on earth and Propalyia, in the Underworld. Hekate once assisted Demeter in her search for Persephone for nine days through the Underworld, guiding Demester by torches, until mother and daughter reunited. Since then, she accompanies Persephone into the Underworld for six months out of the year, where she attends to her kingdom as Queen of the Restless Dead. She is also the protector of young women and witches, and Lady of the Crossroads, providing counsel to lost souls and guiding them to the next realm.

Nicknames: None.

Likes: her dogs, cemeteries, gardening, tarot cards, candles, coffee, night. Passionate choices. Independence. Lawlessness, freedom, rebellion, the ability to move to a new place without any warning.

Dislikes: chauvinists, abusers, pink, being told what to do.

Flaws/Weaknesses

Stubborn Independence. Hekate has an independent streak and a terminal case of confidence in her own abilities. As a result, she has a tendency to handle things on her own, rather than ask for help. This stubbornness offers her solitude, which she claims to enjoy, but a piece of her secretly longs for companionship.

Lawlessness. Hekate is famous for her refusal to bow to anyone man or god, even when living in the Underworld. She prefers to be traveling, refusing to be fettered to anyone or anything (including lovers). She will also abruptly leave when she feels someone is trying to control or dominate her. She will appear at the drop of a hat, however, to any lost soul, abused woman, or mortal witch who needs her help.

Tragic Love. Hekate’s fierce independence and refusal for help has led to a string of tumultuous relationships that always end in heartache. The most recent example of this is the mortal she begrudgingly gave her heart to before quickly convincing herself it wasn’t meant to be. Now, her steps are haunted by that choice and by the spirit of her restless love.

Skills And Abilities

Immortality. Technically immortal. Immune to the effects of aging, cannot die by any conventional means, and is immune to all known mortal diseases and infections. As a deity, they are able to teleport, or "pop" anywhere in the mortal plane with a few exceptions, the God Floors of the GC HQ are mystically protected, so no teleporting to or in between them, anything on the non-mortal plane, i.e., the Underworld, Atlantis, and the Void, are non-accessible without a guide.

Mother Tongue. As the bridge between the mortal world and the divine, they speak all languages mortals do, even the long dead ones.

Goddess of Witchcraft. In Propalyia, Hekate has all power. This is where all her spells/tools/magic comes from that she uses on earth. While she is on earth, she can shape physical reality with her will, but must use tools from Propalyia/elements of earth. She can create spells that both bind and remove obstacles. She is adept at ritual craft and can make talismans, potions, charms, hexes, and other things that carry magic with specific intent (these often require research, preparation time, and acquisition of sometimes very rare ingredients). She can summon and banish elementals, demons, wights, and other plane dwelling entities, though her skills and powers will be pitted against the creature. She is a skilled herbalist and alchemist, having spent many years researching and contributing to the knowledge of magical Orders throughout the world. There are too many forms of magic to list, but as Witch Queen, she either is adept at them, or has connections with someone who is.

Queen of the Restless Dead. When she is not aiding mortals and the like with witchcraft, she also helps guide lost souls to the Underworld. Most of these souls are those who will not cross the River Styx to a place to rest, but those who will remain in Propalyia, under her wing. Since she is also Lady of the Crossroads, she can help those passed over by the other psychopomps find their way to the Underworld. In her kingdom, she tries to make her shades as comfortable as possible, since she feels bad for them, and she also has the power to make them corporeal. Unfortunately, many are not happy with the situation, regardless of her efforts.

Personal Attire

Normal Daily Wear. all black; black leggings or jeans, big black cold shoulder sweaters and sweatshirts (sometimes grey sweatshirts), black leather coat, black boots. Black nail polish. Sometimes Chucks. Like a comfy goth rockstar.

Alternate Wear. Will throw on a black dress if she must. Will occasionally wear red nails and lips. If she has to wear jewelry, it's either silver or black, more edgy than sparkly.

Magical Artifacts/Weapons

None.

Historical Synopsis

HEKATE (Hecate) was the goddess of magic, witchcraft, the night, moon, ghosts and necromancy. She was the only child of the Titanes Perses and Asteria from whom she received her power over heaven, earth, and sea.

Hekate assisted Demeter in her search for Persephone, guiding her through the night with flaming torches. After the mother-daughter reunion became she Persephone's minister and companion in Haides.

Three metamorphosis myths describe the origins of her animal familiars: the black she-dog and the polecat (a mustelid house pet kept by the ancients to hunt vermin). The dog was the Trojan Queen Hekabe (Hecuba) who leapt into the sea after the fall of Troy and was transformed by the goddess. The polecat was either the witch Gale, turned as punishment for her incontinence, or Galinthias, midwife of Alkmene (Alcmena), who was transformed by the enraged goddess Eileithyia but adopted by the sympathetic Hekate.

Hekate was usually depicted in Greek vase painting as a woman holding twin torches. Sometimes she was dressed in a knee-length maiden's skirt and hunting boots, much like Artemis. In statuary Hekate was often depicted in triple form as a goddess of crossroads.[1]

Introduction Written By Scribe

Listen, I’m not sure why I even need to do one of these. You won’t ever see me unless you’re a scorned woman or witch, or on the off chance that you die without your toll money to get across the River Styx. If the latter is the case, then you will most likely hate me, even though I try to make sure that every poor shade trapped in my realm has whatever they need. I just can’t let you out.

Not my rules!

If you really must know, my name is Hekate, also known as the Queen of the Restless Souls or Witch Queen if you’re needing some of my spellcraft. But for the most part, I remain in the shadows, a whisper in the autumn wind, the long howl of a wolf under a full moon.

Unless you have like, strong coffee, or some sexist man that needs hexing. Then I’m your goddess.
