Personal Information

General Overview: Amphitrite is fickle and flirtatious, serene and virulent, just like the seas she rules. She may come off at times like a bitch, but she’s normally fairly playful, like the sea creatures she surrounds herself with.

Deity Nicknames: Amph, Amphy, Trix

Likes: The beach, clear waters, stormy nights, sex, a nice white wine. Amph also likes testing would-be sailors who try to sail her seas.

Dislikes: Pollution, dishonesty, deep-sea fishermen and shark-fishers.

Flaws / Weaknesses

Freshwater Catch. Freshwater drains Amphitrite quickly if she needs to operate among the lakes of the world. If forced to swim or remain in freshwater for any length of time, Amphitrite will begin to weaken in proportion to the length of exposure. She will need to recuperate in the cleanest section of the ocean she can find to build her strength back up. She does carry a vial of salts to help combat this weakness (see Artifacts below).

Maelstrom. Like the sea, Amphitrite’s mood can change on a dime. She can be extremely fickle at some times. At other times, her mood can be overwhelming to the point of sucking everyone else’s emotions into her downward spiral.

Tidal Bound. Bound to the tides of the world, the moon affects Amphitrite’s emotions. When experiencing a spring tide (the most drastic of tidal changes) Amphitrite is erratic, with common mood swings and sudden outbursts. When experiencing a neap tide (the least drastic of tidal changes) Amphitrite is almost calm to the point of complacency.

Part The Seas. Having recently separated from Poseidon, no longer being his consort, Amphitrite needs to find her own way, and struggles, trying to find happiness in external factors (drink, sex, gambling, etc) instead of focusing on herself and her inner happiness (owning her own business, rejoining the family, etc).

Skills / Abilities

Immortality. Technically immortal. Immune to the effects of aging, cannot die by any conventional means, and is immune to all known mortal diseases and infections. As a deity, they are able to teleport, or "pop" anywhere in the mortal plane with a few exceptions, the God Floors of the GC HQ is mystically protected, so no teleporting to or in between them, anything on the non-mortal plane, i.e., the Underworld, Atlantis, and the Void, are non-accessible without a guide.

Babble-speak. Can communicate in all languages and dialects.

Aquakinesis. Amphitrite has control over all forms of saltwater, as her natural habitat, where the purpose is to retain and preserve the ocean within its bounds. Her powers are considerable, to the point of being able to stop a tsunami from rolling ashore by diverting the wave volume back into the ocean and mitigating the seismic force that caused the wave. In this manner, she is the blessed foil to Poseidon who often caused such events. Unlike Poseidon, however, Amphitrite cannot manipulate the water in the human body, nor would she want that power.

Shapeshifting. Amphitrite has the ability to take on a range of sea-related forms. Though her primary shift is in the form of a mermaid, she may also assume the form of seafoam, a dolphin, or the waters of the sea itself. She can remain in her mermaid form or dolphin indefinitely. As seafoam or the sea itself, Amphitrite is at the mercy of the larger body of water she inhabits, not having fins to navigate or respond.

Salty Bitch. Amphitrite can cast a spell on others using the medium of seawater that has been in contact with her body (usually her hair). By wringing out her hair and allowing it to evaporate, she gathers and stores the remaining salt. This salt may be sprinkled on another or added to food to be consumed. When this occurs, the mortal or immortals become sensitive to all forms of irritation - mental, emotional, physical. This causes the target to be agitated, much like salt in a wound, and, potentially, to lash out. The power is inherent in the salt itself, so anyone with access to it can utilize its powers.

Siren Song. Amphitrite has the innate ability to lure men to the sea with the tones of her voice, both speaking and singing. The sound of her voice can cause all forms of madness: insanity, paranoia, desire, infatuation. This power loses its effectiveness the farther away from the ocean Amphitrite is. Once she can no longer smell a salt breeze, the power is reduced to nothing. Depending on the intensity of the effects of the song, the listener can be compelled to do most anything, even up to acting against their own self-preservation instincts. This works on both mortals and immortals, however, immortals will realize what is happening and have the choice to resist or succumb to the effects.

Atlantis Call. In conjunction with Poseidon, Amphitrite can command the oceans to crest over the shores, rising to the level of Trinity, Inc. floods (or any point shy of that). This power can only be used while yoked to Poseidon, and Poseidon, likewise, cannot perform this task without Amphitrite. This power works through the displacement of the available water in the oceans and seas, pulling waters from other places and localizing them where the effects are desired. Since the power requires both Sovereigns of the Sea to perform the task if one or the other breaks the link, the waters dissipate and the spell ends. While Poseidon and Amphitrite are joined in this working, both of them are vulnerable to attack as they are fully merged with the seas they are manipulating and unable to divert attention or energy to anything else.

Possessions

Normal Daily Wear: Soft blue sundress, wide-brimmed sun-hat, almost always barefoot.

Alternate Wear: A nice blue evening gown, for more formal occasions.

Magical Artifacts/Weapons

The Jewel of Seas. A sapphire of the deepest blue, set into a pendant which she wears at all times. The sapphire was a gift to her from Poseidon. While wearing the pendant, all Amphitrite has to do is speak Poseidon’s name and the pendant will send out a sonar signal that will carry through the waters to the far reaches of the earth. Poseidon gifted this to her that he should always be able to come to her aid, if needed. Although they have separated, he has not asked for it back, and the magic still holds.

Salt Of The Sea. Amphitrite carries with her a vial of salt from evaporated water from the first oceans of the world. She has a limited supply of this salt and carries some with her at all times in the event she has to go inland for any length of time. By mixing several grains of this salt with water and drinking it or placing the grains under her tongue, she can prolong her time away from the ocean by several days, though the effects of being away and exposed only to freshwater will accumulate and eventually take over.

Historical Synopsis

AMPHITRITE was the goddess-queen of the sea, wife of Poseidon, and eldest of the fifty Nereides. She was the female personification of the sea--the loud-moaning mother of fish, seals and dolphins.

When Poseidon first sought Amphitrite's hand in marriage, she fled his advances, and hid herself away near Atlas in the Ocean stream at the far ends of the earth. The dolphin-god Delphin eventually tracked her down and persuaded her to return to wed the sea-king.

Amphitrite was essentially the same as the primordial sea-goddess Thalassa. Her Roman equivalent was Salacia whose name means "the salty one." [1]

Introduction

My name is Amphitrite (Amph-i-tri-tee) and I am the consort of Poseidon, the Queen of the Seas. The sea is fickle and I am the sea. I am slow to respond and quick to act. I am violent and calm, stormy and bright. I don’t need anyone in my life who would try to temper that.

Ply my waters mortals, and I will test your mettle, judge if you are worthy to be sailors.

I am the sea, I am free, and I will revel in that freedom.
